Current (2011) Hip Chart - Steven Tyler's nose dive

  1. K so here's how this works...

At the top are Rock, country, pop and rap. Those are the genres.

Then the higher positions in the left column are "hip", and the lower positions are "unhip".

The area circled in red is the portion of the popular music landscape that American Idol typically occupies. Note that it straddles all genres, but not so much into rock and even less into rap, it's mainly a pop and country thing.

The green X is Aerosmith in the 70s.
The purple X is Aerosmith in the early 80s.
The yellow X is Aerosmith from 86 till about 2004.
The big blue X is where Steven Tyler is now with Idol... note that it's way outside his normal genre (read fanbase) and much lower than ever before.

That's why I see it as sad.

Note that "unhip" does not necessarily mean commercially unsuccessful in the short term, spending too much time down in that area can turn you into a joke (Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Spice Girls) and ruin your career. Also note that being way up at the top does not always equal commercial success, in fact spending too much time up there can wreck your career just as easily. If you're looking for sustained, long term success and relevance, you want to aim for the middle to slightly above middle of the halfway line, because that's where most people's taste buds gravitate.

  5. Danae... the difference between seeing something for what it really is vs. just interpreting whatever (usually wrong) conclusion people want to come to, is all in the blah blah blah.

Jess, I don't like Xtina either. Fact is, she's got fans, and the critics usually give her a pass.
